Latest update gutted features for multitasking

After the latest update, Im no longer able to play YouTube videos in the background. I cant listen to something when using another tab, or when using another app, or even when just turning the screen off!

Thats the most heinous problem, I cant even turn off the screen to save battery life, or to avoid touching the screen accidentally.

I assume this is some nonsense regarding YouTube Red, but its absolutely ridiculous to take away features like this. Were already stuck watching ads. Im fine with that. Im also fine with YTR content being stuck behind a paywall. But its stupid to lock a feature thats been perfectly functional up until this point like that.
